LThe villa is located a short distance from the town of Pomarance, where there are all services, shops of all kinds and several bars and restaurants. Pomarance is also a place rich in history, thanks to its ancient origins, dating back to a period before the year 1000, of which it still retains the structure of a medieval castle with walls and access doors. Particularly evocative is the panoramic view of the "caves", a landslide phenomenon similar to the Balze Volterra which, over the centuries, has swallowed up the oldest buildings. The villa is also located half an hour away from the famous city of Volterra, the heart of the Val di Cecina, which dominates it from the top of its "cliffs", a phenomenon of soil erosion. Volterra has very ancient origins and maintains its three historical faces unchanged: Etruscan, of which we admire Porta dell'Arco and Porta Diana, Roman, as clearly highlighted by the theatre, and the medieval one which can be seen in Piazza dei Priori and the palace of the same name, the numerous tower houses and the Duomo. Very interesting is the so-called "Devil's Valley", in Larderello, so called for the boraciferous showers and the natural geothermal manifestations from which geothermal energy is extracted. The puffs, whose emissions can reach a temperature of 130-160°C, seem something apparently threatening but in reality they only represent geothermal activity that has been going on for millions of years and will continue for a very long time. It seems that Dante was already aware of the geothermal phenomena of this area which inspired the landscapes described in the Inferno. Nature lovers will be able to explore the Berignone nature reserve, immersing themselves in the hills and woods. The forest is a sort of large island of woodland, immersed in a sea of fields. Intact, it hosts a rich flora and a varied fauna of wild animals such as wolves, fallow deer, roe deer, wild boars and birds of prey.
The Rocca Sillana, visible from a great distance, it dominates majestically on the summit of a hill 530 meters above sea level, in a privileged position from a military point of view. The Rocca in fact allows strategic control of the Cecina valley and the connected valleys, a very vast territory that includes large portions of the provinces of Pisa, Siena and Grosseto. The legend, also by virtue of the name, would like to trace the origin of the fortress to the civil war between Mario and Silla. According to this legendary hypothesis, the name of the Silla fortress derives from the massimon of the Roman general Lucius Cornelius Silla.
Between Saline di Volterra and Pomarance, there is a beautiful nature reserve, the Berignone Forest, which contains a wild and idyllic landscape. Here the Cecina river offers a sort of natural pool with many small waterfalls about two meters high; a true paradise with numerous beaches and the lake nestled between the two stone stacks: this is the Masso delle Fanciulle.
The Berignone forest nature reserve develops in the Alta Val di Cecina, between the municipalities of Volterra and Pomarance, over an area of more than two thousand hectares. It is an area made up of woods and scrubland populated by rich fauna. We find porcupines, martens, badgers, hares, more than fifty species of birds, but also numerous wild boars and wolves, which live undisturbed among the dense holm oaks and fir trees.
